Though the HIPP Comfort formulas, both German and British, have less lactose than a standard cow or goat formula, which presumably makes baby less fussy and more comfortable. But they also make baby incredibly gassy. Repeat: incredibly gassy! This is likely because they have a stool loosening and laxative effect. On a goat formula, my baby had a bowel movements every two days or so. Now, on Hipp Comfort, it’s daily. Consistency is much softer than on a goat formula. However, the gassiness is probably just as uncomfortable and disruptive as more solid, less regular BMs. Not sure if the reduce lactose has made any difference for my baby because she is so distracted by the constant need to pass gas! So I’d say it’s a tradeoff. I believe that the German Comfort formula was better for my baby than the British version. Not sure why; the only difference I can see are the probiotics added to the German. However, I give my baby daily probiotics anyway, even when she was on the British. Perhaps the difference isn’t in the formula but the baby’s age. As a newborn, the difference in processing nutrients probably improves week to week, so it’s really hard to decipher the differences in formula. All that said, it’s a high quality formula. So weigh the less lactose and softer and more regular BMs against the gassiness.

Update of my past review: I have continued to use this formula in conjunction with Holle Goat. The gassiness subsided after some time. The two times I took my baby off Hipp Comfort (German), my baby’s stools became very solid, took a lot of effort for her to pass, and became much less frequent. After reintroducing Comfort her stools softened up a lot, making it much easier for her to pass. Now I actually recommend this formula for that added benefit. In my personal view, Holle goat and cow are much more nutritious with premium quality dairy, but Hipp Comfort is nutritionally complete, and has the benefit of probiotics, stool loosening, and less lactose.
